The durability of a garment is based on several essential criteria: the quality of the raw materials, manufacturing techniques, resistance tests and maintenance.
Noble and resistant materials
Sustainable clothing begins with the choice of materials. Natural fibers like wool, linen, or organic cotton are preferred: they offer great resistance over time and age better than synthetic fibers made from petroleum, which tend to degrade more quickly.
Synthetic fibers, mostly derived from petrochemicals, represent approximately 70% of textile fibers produced worldwide. Polyester, leading this production with 60.5 million tons in 2021, is particularly polluting. With each wash, these textiles release plastic microfibers that disperse into nature, contaminating soils and oceans.
Artificial fibers, such as viscose, modal, or lyocell, are made from cellulose derived from wood. Although they are naturally occurring, they require the addition of solvents to be transformed into textiles, making them less environmentally friendly than raw natural fibers. Created in the 19th century, they have long been an economical and flexible alternative to silk.
Natural fibers, obtained from plants such as cotton, linen, and hemp, are renowned for their comfort and breathability. However, some crops, such as cotton, remain very water- and chemical-intensive. In 2021, global cotton production reached 24.7 million tonnes, representing approximately a quarter of all textile fibers produced.
At Royal Mer, we embraced sustainability long before it became a trend. Our clothing is designed just as it was in the past: durable, repairable, and transferable. Each piece is designed to last, far from the disposable consumption patterns imposed by fast fashion.

Rigorous manufacturing techniques
Durable clothing also relies on robust assembly, quality knitting that has proven itself over several decades, as well as assembly skills and know-how to combine flexibility and robustness for comfort when worn. This is why tests are carried out on our knits to ensure their resistance to pilling, abrasion, and successive washings. Our seams are reinforced, and the cuts are designed/drawn – studied and created to last over time without losing their structure.

A timeless style
Sustainability also means fashion that avoids aesthetic obsolescence. Focusing on classic cuts and timeless colors ensures that the garment will remain relevant over the years. At Royal Mer, we believe in lasting elegance, one that transcends the seasons without going out of style.
A suitable interview
Sustainable clothing also means well-maintained clothing. Our natural materials require few washes, limiting wear and tear and their environmental impact. We also encourage repair rather than replacement, further extending the life of each piece.

At Royal Mer, sustainability is a given
Unlike some brands that are riding the wave of sustainability, at Royal Mer, quality and heritage have always been at the heart of our DNA. We design our garments with the same attention to detail and durability as the artisans of yesteryear, so they can be worn, loved, and passed down from generation to generation. Choosing sustainable clothing means participating in a paradigm shift in the textile industry. By favoring natural materials, artisanal know-how, and timeless design, Royal Mer is part of this dynamic to offer clothing that lasts for years without compromising quality. Because a well-designed garment is, above all, a garment that lasts.
