At Royal Mer, we design our wool sweaters with a constant focus on durability and quality. Our garments are designed to last, to be worn, repaired, and passed down from generation to generation. But to maximize their longevity, proper care is essential. Follow our tips to care for your wool sweater and keep it in perfect condition year after year.

How often should you wash your wool sweater?

Thanks to its natural antibacterial properties, wool doesn't retain odors or impurities like synthetic fibers. Therefore, there's no need to wash a wool sweater after every use. Simply air it out by hanging it outside for a few hours. If washing is necessary, follow these guidelines:

Machine wash

We always recommend machine washing, which will always be more uniform for the fibers of your sailor sweater than hand washing.

  • Use cold water (20°-30°C maximum): Hot water may felt and shrink the wool fibers.
  • Spin at 600 rpm maximum.
  • Choose a gentle, wool-specific detergent: Avoid harsh detergents that damage the softness and color of the fibers.
  • Select a suitable program: Use the “wool” program and a low spin speed to avoid damaging the fiber.

Hand wash

If you don't have a washing machine, or you are unsure about the reliability of your household appliances (e.g., a washing machine that washes at a higher temperature than indicated), follow our advice:

  • Fill a basin with lukewarm water (between 15°C and 30°C maximum) and add a special wool detergent.
  • Gently immerse the sweater in the soapy water and knead it gently without rubbing or twisting it, in order to preserve the structure of the fibers.
  • Let it soak for a maximum of 10 minutes.
  • Rinse thoroughly with water at the same temperature to avoid thermal shock which could damage the wool.
  • Gently squeeze out excess water without wringing or twisting the garment.

How to dry your wool sweater?

Drying is a crucial step to avoid warping and shrinkage:

  • Favor rolling with a towel: After washing, lay your sweater flat on a towel, roll it up to absorb excess water without twisting the garment.
  • Dry flat: Lay the sweater on a flat surface, away from direct sunlight to prevent fading or stretching.
  • Never use a tumble dryer: The heat and agitation of the drum felt the wool and cause irreversible shrinkage.

How to store your wool sweater?

When not being worn, it is important to store your sweater properly to prevent it from losing its shape or being attacked by moths:

  • Do not hang it: A hanger can stretch the wool and distort the shoulders of the sweater. Fold it carefully and store it flat.
  • Protect against moths naturally: Use lavender sachets or cedar pieces to repel insects while leaving a pleasant scent.
